Huge tank of cichlids at Sea World in Orlando!

When you wander around Sea World, you'll find some neat displays tucked in the corner. This is a HUGE pool full of all different kinds of cichlids. There's so many they don't have to worry about fighting-too crowded! This would be awesome in my living room!

Negatived self portrait, black and white, back view with trees......

Sometimes you can't find something to stand still long enough to take a picture of (ahem.......animals.....) so you end up using yourself. When I was taking b/w darkroom i used to love playing with the solarizing method (you turn the lights on for a second at a certain stage of photo developing, had to wait until you were the only one in the lab!), and this picture was digitally solarized. I like it!

It's cold in Florida! A few tips for the heatless ones.......

It's really cold for south Florida....personally, I'm freezing!

There's no heat in the house I'm at, so I've devised a few ways to stay warm and thought I'd share.

1. Layer. Clothes, clothes, more clothes. Put on the sneakers, the bunny slippers, whatever you have to keep your feet warm. Polyester is cold, wear your cotton or acrylic things. Of course, there's only a few layers you can add before you just can't move, at which point your only recourse is to crawl into bed.

2. Turn things on. If you don't mind a slightly higher electric bill, turn on the TV, the computers, the printers, etc- they all produce a little bit of heat that does add up. Two computers in a small room make a huge difference.

3. Confine yourself to one room. Your body heat alone, if you stay in one closed in room, will raise the temperature a little bit. Grab the dog/cat/anything furry and keep them with you, they put out heat too!

4. Light candles......SAFELY. I found that 20 tealight candles in a 12x12 room heat it up noticeably by the time they burn down. And they're cheap if you buy them by the bag. I put mine on a couple of plates on top of a bookcase far away from anything flammable or the cat.

5. Sleep on the top bunk. Okay, this will only work if you have a bunk bed but heat rises-bad in the summer, great in the winter!

Don't forget to cover the plants, or bring them in.....and keep an eye on the animals. They get cold too! Anything goat to dog sized can usually be persuaded to keep an old tshirt on when it's cold. Set out a blanket for the cat to burrow in. Put heaters in the fish tanks, a light over the snakes....keep em warm!

Hopefully you're just reading this post for amusement and not because you to don't have any heat :). Stay warm!

BIG frog on the wall!

There was a HUGE tree frog by the door when I came home. I immediatly ran inside and grabbed the camera. The low vantage point makes this picture unique! Luckily he decided not to jump on my head when he came down from the wall :)

Goat sisters

When they were young, Mocha and Cappuchino were best of friends. Even older they stuck together like glue, but Mocha ended up being a flighty goat while Cappuchino liked her head scratched.

Emu HI!

Sometimes you manage to capture an animal at just the right moment! Like this curious emu, he kept moving his head around too fast to get a good shot. But then he heard something and looked straight at me. I think he was going to eat the camera after this.....so I beat feet after taking this :)

Roses ornament

When zazzle decided to start carrying ornaments I made this one on request from a friend who couldn't find any pink roses.

Dolphins! and a short blob about Discovery Cove

Dolphins are pretty interesting mammals. Smart, great swimmers, and their skin feels like a swim flipper (the rubber kind.....seriously!). Plus, they always look like they are smiling! The black and white ones are the neatest, but rare in the parks so hard to get a photograph of. This "regular" dolphin loved the camera though! Click on him to see more!

A few years back a friend and I went to Discovery Cove in Orlando. Cost an extra $100 to swim with the dolphins for 30 minutes. Well, you don't really swim with them......that's misleading...that conjures up images of you in a tank of dolphins. What really happens is you stand in a line and the dolphin goes past and lets you touch him (which is how I know they feel like a flipper). Then, you swim out a ways and the dolphin "kisses" you for the camera. Then you hang on to the fin and WHEEEEEEEEEE get taken back in! Dolphin ride!!

After (or before depending on what time your turn is) you can go shuffle around with the stingray pool. Shuffle? Yep-you really don't want to step ON a stingray! Then you can go swim in the giant aquarium-big round pool with a fake reef in the middle and fish and rays swimming around and around. If you can hold your breath long enough, the bottom of the reef has a small shark inside of it behind glass you can see.

It's pretty cool.......but expensive for what you get. I was told the Florida Keys has a dolphin experience that lasts longer..... I probably won't do it again due to the cost, but I'm glad I did it then :)

Hydroponics-pre setup.

I recently found out that an old neighbor opened up a hydroponics store. For those of you local, it's EZ Grow Green on Bayshore Boulevard in Port St. Lucie. Their facebook is here:

I've looked into it a few times, but it looked to complicated. After seeing the bucket systems and the easy home depot type, I decided to give it a go. I'd like to grow my hot peppers year round and I'm tired of fighting bugs!

So I bought the bucket system-basically you take a black bucket, drop a basket in it to hold the media, fill it with water and nutrient, add plant, add an airstone and pump and viola! Hydroponics! The kit came with the media, I'm also going to do another bucket using turface from my bonsai.

Then I got the fitting kit and went to home depot and bought two big storage containers. For the media in the baskets I'll use turface since I just bought a bag of it.

The cold snap here has made me gun shy on moving the plants, so I'm going to wait to set it up. I may go ahead and get the pieces all put together, but the garage is full of plants and doesn't have much room to move around in.

I will take pictures and post them here as I get going on it.......stay tuned!

Carousel Horse Mousepad

This horse is my favorite out of all the photographs I've taken of carousel horses. I love how they have her name, Marina Rose, right on her shoulder. And the photograph makes it look the the carousel is going to jump off the page! Click on it and you can zoom in to see the detail.

Flash mobs, hydroponics, and photography

What do those have in common? Those are three things I've looked up in the last 15 minutes ;).
Flash mobs are neat when it's controlled and involves music. Apparently some of them have gotten out of hand, but mostly they're just fun. Like this one:
